Farmacy SB Guide to Cannabinoids: THC

THC is like the celebrity of cannabis. Even the most casual users of cannabis products know at least something about THC, like the fact that it’s the main chemical compound that gives you a ‘high.’

But the truth is that many people don’t fully understand how THC works, what it means for the products you use, or everything that it has to offer. THC actually carries a long list of potential wellness and health benefits beyond the high.

But first, let’s start with the basics.

What is THC?

THC is a chemical found in cannabis plants, a classification of chemicals known as cannabinoids. We discussed exactly what cannabinoids are in our last post in this series, but we’ll summarize here.

Cannabinoids are the chemicals found in cannabis, and they’re similar to endocannabinoids that occur naturally within our own body. Normally, those endocannabinoids pair with receptors in our brain and body. When you consume cannabis, the cannabinoids bind with many of those same receptors, bringing positive effects like euphoria and the health benefits we’ll discuss later.

THC is just one cannabinoid, and others include CBD, THCa, CBDa, and more. Each has its own set of effects and benefits, though there’s a great deal of crossover.

Why does THC get you high?

THC binds with receptors in the brain that lead to the release of dopamine, the chemical responsible for feelings of euphoria. This is what results in the ‘high’ you experience when using THC. On average, the effects of this high last around two hours and begin between 10 to 30 minutes after being ingested based on the method of consumption and the dosage.

While THC is most commonly known as the best way of getting high, more and more research is pointing to a wide range of health benefits of THC as well.

What other benefits come from THC?

Research has shown a wide range of health benefits to THC, and our customers at The Farmacy have told us all about the many improvements they’ve experienced to existing conditions thanks to the responsible use of THC-based cannabis products.

These include:

Pain
FDA-approved trials have confirmed that THC can be an effective treatment for many forms of pain, especially nerve-related pain.

Nausea
THC has actually been available in FDA-approved pill forms for treating nausea in cancer patients since the 80s. Now that cannabis is becoming more widely accepted and available, more people are discovering THC’s powerful anti-nausea effects.

Poor Sleep
Have trouble sleeping? THC has been shown to be an effective way to help fall asleep more quickly, and breathe better when sleep is interrupted.

Depression
There is promising early research to suggest that THC can be an effective treatment for depression in some patients.

Loss of Appetite
A range of conditions can lead to a dangerous loss of appetite, and THC has been shown to be effective in helping restore appetite in many cases.

Inflammation
Chronic inflammation can not only cause pain and discomfort but also a range of risks for more serious diseases. THC can decrease production of some of the chemicals that lead to inflammation.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and new benefits and uses for CBD are being discovered every day.

What products contain THC?

Wondering how you can find products that contain THC? Don’t worry— it’s one of the most commonly found cannabinoids in a range of cannabis products. Many of the products on The Farmacy SB’s shelves contain THC in at least some percentage. You can easily identify how much THC a product contains relative to other cannabinoids by checking out the product description on the packaging or its listing on our online cannabis shop.
