Now that we’ve covered THC and CBD, the cannabinoid celebrities, it’s time to turn our cannabinoid guide to some of their lesser-known cousins. While these variations may not be as popular in cannabis products, they can still have some very promising benefits and effects that could improve your personal health and wellness.
In today’s piece in the series, we’ll be talking about THCa and CBDa, two cannabinoid acids that are found in living & growing cannabis plants.
Cannabinoid Acids vs. Cannabinoids
So, are cannabinoid acids and cannabinoids the same thing? Not exactly. But it’s not so much a matter of what they are as when they are. The cannabinoids known as THC and CBD only enter the state we know them as after plants have gone through a process known as decarboxylation.
In fact, if you were to stumble across a cannabis plant growing somewhere and consume raw flower, you wouldn’t experience any euphoric effects or ‘high.’ That’s because cannabis plants don’t actually produce THC and CBD while they’re growing. They create acid forms of these cannabinoids known as THCa and CBDa. (Note— when we say ‘acids,’ we’re talking about chemical acids, not sci-fi, dissolve-titanium-bars acids).
It isn’t until cannabis is exposed to heat & time that THCa becomes THC and CBDa becomes CBD, including all of the properties those two cannabinoids are known for.
But what if you could access THCa or CBDa in their original form? Could those cannabinoid acids have beneficial properties of their own?
Benefits of THCa and CBDa
THCa and CBDa affect your body in a similar way to their cannabinoid cousins, by interacting with the endocannabinoid system in your nervous system.
Here are some of the most significant observed effects of THCa and CBDa:
THCa and CBDa inhibit the activity of certain body chemicals that lead to inflammation, which can help in reducing swelling and other inflammation in the body.
Boosted Immune System
There has been some results that suggest THCa and CBDa can help boost the immune system of certain patients and help them avoid and fight sickness more effectively.
Reduced pain has been observed as a benefit of both THCa and CBDa, making them a potential alternative for pharmaceutical painkillers.
Other Potential Benefits
While much more research is necessary, THCa and CBDa have been shown to have promising potential benefits in reducing the growth of cancer cells. This could make these cannabinoid acids a powerful future tool in helping treat cancer for a wide range of patients.
Other early research suggests that THCa and CBDa might be effective in treating nausea, epilepsy, anxiety and depression, though additional data is necessary before we could make an official recommendation.
